An inlet and interlock let you run part of your house from a portable generator through your existing panel and existing wiring. The inlet box is a weatherproof connection point mounted outside. The interlock is a mechanical plate on the panel that makes it physically impossible to have the utility main and the generator breaker closed at the same time. Between them, they replace the cord run through a cracked window, and they do it in a way an inspector will pass.

What an inlet and interlock installation covers
- A load conversation first. How much generator you have, and what you actually want running: refrigeration, a well pump, the furnace blower, some lighting and outlets, or more. This determines everything that follows, and it is worth being honest about — a generator sized for a fridge will not run central air, and no amount of wiring changes that.
- A generator inlet box mounted outside in a sensible location: reachable from where the generator will actually sit, far enough from windows and doors, and clear of where you park.
- A dedicated feeder from the inlet to the panel, in the right conductor size for the inlet rating and the run length.
- A panel interlock kit matched to your specific panel make and model. This is the part that matters most and the part most often done wrong. How we do the work
We start at the panel, because the panel decides what is possible. We identify the make and model, confirm a listed interlock kit exists for it, and check there is space in the right position for the generator breaker — interlocks require the breaker in a specific slot, and a full panel or an obsolete one changes the plan. If it does change the plan, you hear that at the assessment, not after the work is under way.
We then agree the inlet location with you on site, run and terminate the feeder, fit the interlock and breaker, and label everything. Where a permit is required we handle the paperwork and meet the inspector.
Last, we walk the sequence with you: what to shut off, what order to close breakers in, how to shed load if the generator complains, and what never to do — starting with never backfeeding through a dryer outlet, which is the practice this installation exists to make unnecessary.
