What a panel upgrade includes
- A load calculation on what the property actually draws and is about to draw. This determines the service size, and it is the step that decides whether you need 200-amp service or whether your existing service is fine and the problem is elsewhere.
- The panel itself, with circuits distributed sensibly rather than transferred across in the order they came off the old bus.
- Modern protection where code requires it — AFCI protection for the living areas that now call for it, GFCI where the location demands it. These are code requirements on new work rather than extras, and both catch things a plain breaker never will.
- Grounding and bonding brought up to standard, including the grounding electrode system and water and gas bonding. On older properties this is frequently the largest genuine improvement in the whole job.
- Utility coordination for disconnection and reconnection where the service conductors or meter equipment are involved.
- Permit and inspection, coordinated with the local building department.

Signs you are due one
- Breakers that trip under normal use, or that have been “solved” by fitting a larger breaker on the same wire. That last one is dangerous and more common than it should be.
- A fuse box, or a panel with no room left and nothing but full-width breakers and tandem workarounds.
- A panel that is warm, discoloured, buzzing, or smells of hot plastic. Stop reading and call.
- Adding significant load — an EV charger, a heat pump, a hot tub, a workshop, an addition.
- A renovation where new circuits are going in and the existing service will have to carry them.
- An insurer, buyer or inspector raising the panel type or its age.
- Lights dimming when the air conditioning starts. Sometimes normal, sometimes a service capacity symptom, always worth measuring rather than guessing.
How we work through a panel upgrade
We measure before we recommend. That means opening the panel, identifying what is really connected, checking the service conductors and the grounding, and running the load calculation. Two honest outcomes come out of that: your service is genuinely undersized and here is what it takes to fix it, or your service is fine and your actual problem is a circuit — in which case the right job is a dedicated circuit or fault-finding, and it costs you considerably less.
If the upgrade goes ahead, you get the full scope first: what happens to the service, whether the meter equipment is involved, whether the panel moves, how long the power is off, and what the permit and inspection sequence looks like. We schedule the outage for a time that suits the household.
On the day we work to a plan rather than improvising a rebuild with your power off. Circuits are transferred deliberately, terminations torqued to specification, protection installed where code requires it, and the whole board labelled. Then it is tested, and inspected where the jurisdiction requires it.
