This is home. Power Line Electrical Contractors is based in White House, which means most of the roads here are ones we drive anyway and most of the neighbourhoods are ones we already know the layout of. Being close matters in this trade — not as a slogan, but because it makes returning to a property straightforward when something needs a second look.
White House straddles the Robertson and Sumner county line along the I-65 corridor north of Nashville, with Millersville and Goodlettsville to the south, Greenbrier and Coopertown to the west, Cross Plains and Portland to the north, and Cottontown out to the east. We work across the whole of that area, in houses, small commercial buildings and the properties out on the rural roads between them.
About White House
The city takes its name from a white-painted stagecoach inn that stood on the old road between Nashville and Louisville — a landmark distinctive enough that the place ended up named after a building. The route it sat on is still the spine of the town, now paralleled by the interstate, and that interstate access is the single biggest reason for the growth of the last few decades.
What makes White House unusual administratively is the county line running through it. Part of the city lies in Robertson County and part in Sumner County, which affects everything from schools to which county office a particular record sits in. For electrical work, the practical consequence is knowing which jurisdiction a given property falls in before assuming anything about permitting and inspection — a detail that is easy for an out-of-town contractor to get wrong and easy for a local one to get right.
The character of the place is still transitional. Newer subdivisions sit alongside older houses on larger parcels, and within a mile or two of any of it you are into working farmland.
Two kinds of property, two kinds of job
The newer subdivision housing is straightforward electrically. It was built to a reasonably recent code cycle, the service is adequate for what the house was designed to do, and the work is usually additive: a vehicle charging circuit in the garage, a hot tub on the patio, a finished bonus room, a shop in a detached garage, network cabling for people who work from home. These are load questions more than repair questions, and they start with a look at what capacity is genuinely spare.
The older properties are a different conversation. Farmhouses and country houses out on the county roads have often been added to over decades, with each addition wired by whoever was handy. It is common to find three or four vintages of cable in one building, a subpanel fed by conductors sized for a much smaller load, and outbuildings connected by a run that nobody living there can fully account for. The first job at those properties is establishing what is actually present.
Outbuildings, wells and agricultural loads
Rural and semi-rural properties around here come with equipment that suburban houses do not.
Well pumps are the most common. A pump that has started tripping its breaker or running rough is sometimes a pump problem and sometimes a supply problem, and telling those apart before anyone pulls a pump saves a great deal of money and digging. Pressure switches, control boxes and the buried run out to the wellhead all age, and buried runs in particular fail at their splices.
Barns, workshops and detached garages raise the feeder question. Running power to a separate structure has specific requirements — the size of the feeder, how grounding and bonding are handled at the second building, disconnecting means, and protection appropriate to a damp or dusty environment. A lot of existing outbuilding feeds around here predate the current rules or were never done to them in the first place.
Then there is equipment: shop tools that need dedicated capacity, livestock water heaters, ventilation fans, welders. Each of those has a load profile, and the honest answer sometimes is that the property needs a larger service before it needs anything else.
Commercial work in a growing town
Commercial building here follows the interstate exits and the main highway through town — convenience and fuel, restaurants, small retail, contractor yards, storage and light industrial units, and the professional offices that come with a growing population.
That work tends to be practical rather than glamorous. Fitting out a unit for a new occupant. Adding circuits for equipment the building was not planned around. Replacing aged lighting with something that draws less and lights better, particularly in high-bay spaces where relamping is a chore. Getting exit and emergency lighting into a condition where it passes inspection because it works, not because it looks right.
Storms and standby power
The north end of the region catches severe weather regularly, and the mix of overhead distribution and open country means outages here can run longer than they do closer to the city.
We install generator inlets and interlocks so a portable generator can feed a house safely, with a mechanical interlock that makes it impossible to energise the utility side while the generator runs. On rural properties this is worth thinking about seriously, because losing power also means losing the well pump, which means losing water — a much bigger inconvenience than losing lights.
Whole-property surge protection at the panel is the companion job. Long rural feeders and lightning are a poor combination, and the cost of a surge device is small next to the cost of what it protects.
