About Donelson
Donelson grew up in the 1950s and 1960s, when the land east of the city filled in with brick ranch houses, tidy subdivisions and the schools and shops to serve them. Later infill and a good deal of renovation has followed, but the bones of the community are mid-century, and the electrical installations still reflect that unless someone has deliberately changed them.
Being close to the airport and the interstate also gives Donelson a working commercial side — offices, hotels, service businesses and light industrial units mixed in among the residential streets.
What sixty-year-old wiring looks like now
The pattern in these houses is consistent enough to predict. Services were originally sized well below what a modern household draws. Grounding is often either absent on branch circuits or relies on a system that was adequate under the code of the day and is not now. Receptacles are frequently two-prong, and where they have been swapped for three-prong ones without a ground being run, you have an outlet that looks safe and is not. Bathrooms, kitchens, garages and exteriors usually lack the ground-fault protection that current code requires.
Add to that fifty or sixty years of small alterations — a den converted from a carport, a window unit replaced with central air, a garage turned into a room — and the panel schedule rarely bears much resemblance to what is actually connected.

Service and panel upgrades come first, usually because a homeowner wants capacity for something specific rather than because the panel has failed. Grounding and bonding corrections follow close behind, and on an older Donelson house that is often the single largest genuine safety improvement available. Beyond that: dedicated circuits for kitchen appliances and laundry, replacing deteriorated cable found during a remodel, adding ground-fault and arc-fault protection where it belongs, whole-home surge protection, and generator inlets with a proper interlock so a portable set can be used safely when the power goes down.
