Old Hickory sits on the Cumberland River in the northeast of Davidson County, below the dam that holds back the lake of the same name. It is one of the more distinctive places we work in, and the electrical work reflects that.
About Old Hickory
Most of the village was laid out and built as company housing early in the twentieth century, to house workers at the plant on the river. That origin is still legible in the street pattern and in the houses themselves — compact, closely spaced, similar in plan, and now a century old in places. Around that core sit later additions from every decade since, plus the properties along and near the water, which range from modest cottages to substantial rebuilds.
Century-old houses and what they hide
Housing of that vintage has usually been through several electrical eras. The original installation may have been replaced, partly replaced, or simply extended by whoever was handy at the time, and the only way to know is to look. Knob-and-tube wiring turns up in properties of this age, sometimes abandoned in place and sometimes still live, sometimes spliced into modern cable in an attic by someone who should not have. Cloth-insulated conductors that crumble when a device is pulled forward are common. So are ungrounded circuits, panels sized for a household that no longer exists, and junctions made outside a box.
None of that means a whole rewire is automatically the answer. A staged plan that deals with the worst circuits first is frequently the sensible route, particularly in an occupied house where opening every wall at once is not realistic. We will tell you honestly which of the two your property needs.
Lake-side and outbuilding work
Proximity to the water brings its own list. Boat lifts, dock receptacles and exterior circuits all live in a harsher environment than anything indoors, and they need the right protection, the right enclosures and the right burial depths. Detached garages, shops and storage buildings often want a properly sized feeder rather than the extension cord arrangement they have been running on. Outdoor lighting, generator inlets for storm season and surge protection at the panel all come up regularly here.
Renovation timing
If you are already renovating an Old Hickory house, that is the moment to deal with the wiring. Once the plaster is back up, the cheapest and least disruptive opportunity has gone. Bring us in while the walls are open and the same work costs a fraction of what it does later, with far less mess to put right.
